Quantum Frontiers lecture: Dr. David Wineland on Atomic Clocks and Ion Trap Quantum Computing
Quantum Frontiers lecture: Dr. David Wineland on Atomic Clocks and Ion Trap Quantum Computing
Prof. David Wineland speaks about atomic clocks and ion-trap quantum computers at the Quantum Frontiers Distinguished Lecture, presented by the Institute for Quantum Computing and the University of Waterloo's Department of Physics and Astronomy. Wineland is a Fellow of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and group leader of the Ion Storage group in the Time and Frequency Division at NIST Boulder, CO. Atoms absorb electromagnetic radiation at certain precise frequencies. Knowing this, a recipe for making an atomic clock is fairly simple to state: we first need an oscillator to produce radiation and a device that tells us when the atoms absorb it, thereby indicating that the oscillator frequency is synchronized with the atoms' absorption frequency. To make a clock from this apparatus, we then simply count cycles of the oscillator -- the duration of a certain number of cycles defines a unit of time, for example, the second. In one of the world's most accurate clocks, we count the cycles of an oscillator that has a frequency of 1052871833148990.44 cycles per second -- corresponding to a near-ultraviolet absorption frequency in 27Al+ ions. At this level of precision, many effects, including those due to special and general relativity, can affect our measurements; therefore, our primary task is to determine and correct for these perturbing effects. For many centuries and still continuing today, a primary application of accurate clocks is for precise navigation.

"Time To Reassess The International Atomic Safety Regime" Says UN Sec'y General Ban Ki-Moon
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says it is "time to reassess the international atomic safety regime. Is the monitoring information dispensed by the media reliable? Can we depend on the World Health Organization (WHO) to protect our health, especially during the Fukushima crisis/diaster as radioactive particles go up into the atmosphere and can be deposited into our lungs and food and water? Ships may have to be scrapped due to radioactivity. Strontium causes childhood leukemia as 'noble gases' are vented from common nuclear plants, degenerating into this radioactive element that is radioactively dangerous for at least 300 YEARS!

Bad Movie General: "Survival Under Atomic Attack"
This is episode 13 of Bad Movie General, a series by Scotteration, Inc. where our unnamed protagonist and his compatriot Nick watch some of the worst short films of yesteryear. In this thirteenth episode, our heroes duke it out agains the movie Survival Under Atomic Attack, which showcases Duck-and-Cover-esque naive-ness about what to do in case you get the crap nuked out of you. A Scotteration, Incorperated Production. Shadowrama is not ours. The process we use is nothing like what they did, but still, we are well aware of the fact that men sitting in theater seats in front of a movie is not our idea. MST3K fans here, not trying to outdo them, just paying a homage of sorts. Written by Scott L. and Nick D. Starring Scott L as Unnamed Protagonist, and Nick D. as Nick.

TodaysNetworkNews: HIROSHIMA & NAGASAKI ATOMIC BOMB ANNIVERSARY
TodaysNetworkNews: 06 August 2009 - UNTV: United Nations: On the occasion of the 64th anniversary this week of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon calls on the world to "convince leaders, once and for all, of the waste, futility and dangers posed by weapons of mass destruction." On the occasion of the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reiterated his vision of a world free of nuclear weapons, and issued an urgent call that we must disarm. SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General: Sixty-four years ago, atom bombs rained down on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Upon seeing such horror and devastation, people throughout the world thought such carnage must never happen again. But thousands of nuclear weapons remain in global arsenals. The risk of nuclear terrorism is real. Early development of nuclear weapons took place here at Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the United States during the Second World War. The first-ever nuclear test was conducted in New Mexico on 16 July 1945. Three weeks later, on 6 August 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb - known as "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb contained the equivalent of between 12 and 15000 tons of TNT and devastated an area of five square miles or 13 square kilometers. More than 60 percent of the buildings in the city were destroyed. A second nuclear bomb on Nagasaki followed on 9 August ...

Einstein's theories expanded upon, and in some cases refuted, universal laws formulated by Newton in the late seventeenth century." Albert Einstein was asked to pose so many times that he said if he hadn't been a physicist, he could have made a living as a model. Inventor and innovations surrounding nuclear physics.

Atomic Dog [Original Extended Version] - George Clinton (1982)
"Atomic Dog" is a song by George Clinton from his 1982 solo album "Computer Games". The track was released as a single in December of 1982. The single failed to reach the Top 100 of the Pop Chart at all, though it has arguably attained greater popular stature over the years since its release. George Clinton's P-Funk Collective reached its commercial and conceptual height in 1976 with the release of the Parliament album "Mothership Connection" and a series of spectacular concert tours. However, as the band and their concept of funk grew, the organization became entangled in internal dissension, legal disputes, and creative exhaustion. "Atomic Dog" was the P-Funk Collective's last single to reach #1 on the US R&B chart. According to Clinton, most of the song's lyrics were ad-libbed during the recording process. Although "Atomic Dog" is now regarded a classic in American popular music, and the rhythmic hook from "Atomic Dog" has been widely sampled by other musicians, it was held back from radio stations at first. George Clinton's bad reputation in the industry, his political consciousness (as seen in his previous albums and recordings), and a general move towards more youthful-looking acts, kept his songs from being circulated on radio stations. Only after very strong sales was the song finally put on the air. The single "Atomic Dog" was released in December of 1982 and reached #1 on the R&B charts, but peaked at #101 on the pop chart.
